October 28, 2009 Offensive Observations
Irish head coach Charlie Weis worked specifically with the quarterbacks and tight ends during the individual drills. He was coaching the tight ends up on running their routes properly.
“Use to contact to create separation,” Weis told Mike Ragone about running a comeback route.
Kyle Rudolph was next in line and Weis wanted him to lessen his steps on an out route.
“You don’t have to do all this dancing,” the head coach said to No. 9 about his jab steps inside before turning toward the sideline. “Come back to him and pivot.”
Rudolph cut down the shake in his route, but Weis wanted him to come out of his break even quicker.
“You still took one step too many,” he added.
Weis looked better moving around the practice field. He made his way over to the wide receivers without the use of golf cart and was very active in the drill.
WR Michael Floyd appeared to be 100% during the drill (running the routes and catching the ball), but he asked his coach permission before participating.
“Coach (Weis), you don’t mind if I do this, do you,” No. 3 asked.
“You’re fine as long as there’s no defender and you’re not getting taken down,” Weis replied.
“Who’s the new guy,” Weis added as Floyd lined up for his rep. “Looking kind of rusty.”
Floyd responded with a laugh as he got back into line.
Game Prediction
The Irish have an opportunity to start fast this weekend and put the game away earlier than the last few seconds. The commonly used term for this type of matchup is a “trap game,” but the Tuesday practice had the same vibe as any other week.
This is a game where the participation chart should be the longest yet as Notre Dame aims to play a full game against Washington State.
Notre Dame – 49
Washington State – 10
